Seeded Girls

Alicia Craig 17:36

Campbell County WY sr Alicia Craig beat Hoover Glendale CA sr Anita Siraki in a battle of unbeaten national stars.  Craig pulled away midway and won by 15 seconds.  Montgomery CA sr Sara Bei completed the trio of heavy favorites 5 seconds later in third.

Notables not qualifying: Gallup NM jr Felicia Guliford, a two-time top 5 finisher in the national finals, finished far back in 72nd after stumbling at the middle of the race on Poop Out Hill.   WA sr Jodee Adams-Moore was among the leaders throughout the race, but also stumbled in the last 300 meters and ended the race on all fours as dozens of runners passed her.  San Lorenzo Valley CA sr Alejandra Barrientos, a national finalist last year, did not run; Coach Rob Collins said she will take a break from competition to build up her conditioning gradually for outdoor season.  Barrientos led the nation in the 800, 1600, and 3200 before she went down with a stress fracture last June.

Seeded Boys

Mountain States Dominate

Flathead HS, Kalispell MT, placed 1-3-19, making a case for moving up from their US#6 ranking in The Harrier.  From left: Kurt Michels, Seth Watkins, Coach Paul Jorgensen, and David Vidal.

Seth Watkins 15:21

Heavily favored Big Bear CA sr Ryan Hall faltered with 200 meters to go and was passed by Kalispell MT sr Seth Watkins, Mountain View UT sr Chandler Goodwin, and Kalispell MT srDavid Vidal.   The races were delayed by a sewer line break that caused a small fetid lake near the starting line, and it was very warm by the time of the boys race.   California Div 1 champion J.J. Duke was among the top 5 until the very end, but started lurching in the last 100 meters and was passed by Gotcher for the last qualifying spot.  Duke said the heat bothered him.   It was a bunched lead pack most of the race after a torrid first mile in 4:36, but Hall seemed in command on Reservoir Hill with a half mile to go.  But as they hit the air strip before the finish, Hall appeared out of sync as he was passed.  Paul Jorgensen of Kalispell MT, was a proud coach as his Flathead HS team placed 1st, 3rd, and 19th.
